The Ups and Downs

When designing a web page, content is the most important thing.  Some say the more the better.  Others say that the relevancy of your content is of utmost importance.  Trial and error is possibly the best technique when you have a great idea for a website and you want it to show up on the almighty google.

In the past I have developed websites that I thought were amazing only to be let down when they are nowhere to be found on google searches.  Boo!  Then I’ve had web pages that I thought were absolutely terrible and they pop up on page 1.  What the hell!  So needless to say the “google dance” is a tricky one.

So where do we go from here?  I have come to realize that the proper amount of content and relevancy is the key to having visible web sites.  So whats the proper percentage of both of those things.  There is none!  Go big or go home is the best motto for this problem.  Load your web sites up with as much relevant content as possible.  Seems easy right?  Well, there’s not much more to it than that

Well what about keywords?  They are not nearly as important as a lot of people think they are.  Sure, keywords and relevancy kind of go hand in hand…right?  Absolutely.  If you are making a site about “baseball”, then yes, the word baseball is going to have to be very present in the content of your site.  Other words related to “baseball” are also going to be important.  After all, your site is about baseball.  So words like “strike out”, “home run”, “stolen base”, etc. are going to be on your site most likely.  However, the key here is talking as much as you can about these words.  Make sense?

Unfortunately, there is no magic formula for having your websites show up on google organically.  You can always run an adwords campaign if your website is a business.  I developed a tow truck website and got great traffic with my adwords campaign.  The website was  I killed it with that site thanks to adwords. It costs a little bit of money, but you are guaranteed traffic to your site.  So its a great way to get a website up and running, but nobody wants to shell over hundreds of dollars to get your website visible.  So, get going on that relevant content.  There are several ways to have a “visible” website, but content and relevancy are number one in my book.

Web Design Creativity

A lot of web designers focus entirely too much on programming languages and writing code.  They fail to realize that creativity and an imagination can be just as important as a wealth of knowledge with programming and coding.  The first website I developed was a very simple HTML site.  Nothing ground breaking but the content was entertaining and I had several daily visitors on my college campus.

It was about stand up comedy and had a few links to the various comedy clubs in town, a joke of the day, and some Youtube videos of my favorite comedians.  I even threw some advertising up on the site and managed to make a little money.  Not a ton of money, but definitely some beer money for a poor college kid.  When I graduated college and moved back to St. Louis I was able to sell the domain to some guy in Dayton for $500.  Not a bad graduation present. And what did I do with that $500.  I got the windows tinted on my 15 year old car.  Ha.  Stupid college student…

So what am I getting at?  When people do a search on google, do you really think they care how fancy the website they find is?  No.  They are looking for whatever it is they want.  If I’m looking for a lawn care company, I’m going to click on one of the first websites to show up.  And if that website has some good things to say and doesn’t look like some idiot put it together, I’m probably going to give that lawn care company a call and set up some service.  Don’t get all caught up in the latest designing languages.  Use what you are comfortable using and don’t over complicate things

You will find that with great content and simple design ideas, your websites will attract the people that you are looking for.  Use your imagination and creativity to create great, effective, and simple web sites.  The sky is the limit when it comes to web design.  Don’t be afraid to learn a new programming language, but don’t forget the basics.  You can even use simple HTML coding to create awesome websites

Good luck with all of your designing and don’t forget the basics.  The basics could make you a great living and you won’t have any of the headaches that fancy web designers have.  Trust me on this.
